Tyler Howell’s 2008 Volkswagen MK5 GTI
In 2006, Volkswagen had the most drastic changes in generations between the MK4 to MK5. Volkswagen made the transition of the boxy style vehicles of the 90’s to the more rounded, smoother edges of the 2000’s. Advancements in styling and aerodynamics also came with equal advancements in performance due to a revised suspension changes along with other performance upgrades.
Volkswagen's MK5 GTI was unveiled in 2004, however it wasn’t until 2006 when they were making their way over seas and becoming available in the US. Although it wasn’t the highest performing MK5 Golf, which that title belonged to the R32, the GTI was a big Improvement from other Golf models/trims mainly due to its 2.0 liter turbocharged Inline 4 FSI engine and it’s quick shifting DSG, Direct Shift Gearbox, transmission or an optional 6speed manual. While most non GTI variants came with a lot less powerful 1.4 liter I4s.
We've seen many builds regarding the MKV GTI's. It's platform is fairly popular in the European car community, however Tyler really nails the look. It undeniably stands out in a crowd. Tyler won our Instagram poll to make it here as a feature and just by a quick glance it’s easy to see why.
This GTI is fitted with the infamous full body Thunder Bunny kit. The original Thunder Bunny was built by Bill Neumann, founder of Neuspeed, back in 1981. This variant was believe to be the reason we have golfs today in the States. As many know, these aren't the easiest parts to source. Accompanying this is a custom splitter that ties everything together.
If your fascinated by the headlights, don't try searching them up as these including the taillights were both modified and fitted by Tyler himself. Nothing makes a build more personal than using your own two hands to get the job done, perfect or not. Speaking of which, Tyler entirely wrapped this beautiful GTI in an Avery Gloss Rock Grey himself. One our favorite parts about this build. Something about it compliments the rest of the setup so well.
As for performance Tyler has Upgraded charge pipes (CTS), GFB VTA diverter valve, Injen intake, 3” catless downpipe coupled with Megan Racing Exhaust. This GTI sits fitted on 18” WCI MD1’s with the aid of BC Extreme low Coilovers and Godspeed rear upper control arms.
- This is definitely a feature we enjoyed covering and we would like to thank you Tyler for allowing us to cover this build.
