Audi has shown how seemingly effortless it is for many of its models to stand the test of time. So what’s left to be said for the legendary S4 of B5 platform after +20 years?
No doubt this has been one of Audi’s most notorious creations. Personally, many of the people I’ve spoken to about this model have loved it to death. Some has even gone through the lengths of owning multiple B5 S4's. That amongst other things, it simply speaks for itself. The legendary 2.7-liter BitTurbo engine with stock forged internals was extremely tuner friendly. Some has even seen power gains reaching close to the 500hp territory. Are we even still talking about the same 20 year old car?
We’ve had the joy and luxury of meeting with someone, a close friend I might add by the name of Lester (@ucmy6pak), who just so happens to own a '01 Audi B5 S4. He agrees with the stand point of maintaining the factory specs, but still adds to it with his own touch, such as the 034 front lip and air suspension. Thats not all either. This stage 3 S4 can hit the road with the best of them. It's fully outfitted with hybrid KO4's, SMICS, and a full turbo back exhaust custom tuned by Blake Beadle of ETspec.com. Lester states that there is "so much more I can do to it, I just don't want to mess with the classiness of the car. Maybe some new wheels, but that's about it ".
Lester also mentioned something important. He loves his car, however he believes the legendary S4 has become, or is becoming, a "been there, done that" kind of car. Although this maybe true, the same can be said for another legend the E36 M3, or even E30. None the less, the status of the S4 shouldn't be, or even remotely, written off so easily. With that being said, Lester still states that has ZERO intentions of being done with his S4.
So I ask again, what’s left to be said for the legendary B5 S4 that hasn't been said after +20 years? Love it or hate it; It still remains as one hell of a car to have owned and if you just so happen to catch one of these at a show or on the open road, know that you just witness a piece of a great era.
